Look at the sunlight
As it filters through the tall grasses
With tufted ends like quill pens
Lions’ tails and kangaroo mice
Waving in the wind
I’m hiding from you
While you stay in the building
Just beyond the field
I’ll wait in the grass until you leave
And I’ll sit under the barren branches
Of trees and power poles
They stretch as far as they can
To reach that great blue expanse
And the pale yellow sun
With slight sepia rings
A single dot of white
That could be a lonely star
An antisocial cloud
Or a mark on a photograph
I’m hiding from you
Because I don’t want you to see
Just how much
I’m willing to sacrifice
And how far
I’m willing to go
India ink shadows
Stretching out around me
I’m hiding from you
And from myself
Behind a screen of
Waving tall grasses
Under deepening shades blue
